Lesbianism = Feminism ?

Many false dichotomies, false generalizations, and false stereotypes have been wrongly applied to the lesbian way of life. Once a woman announces that she is lesbian, society strips her of her individuality and deals with her according to the outdated stereotypical assumptions that are in place.

Here is the syllogism:

  • If one is lesbian, then it is assumed that one hates men or is anti-male.
  • If one is anti-male, then it is assumed that one is pro-women.
  • If one one is pro-women, then one is feminist.
Therefore, lesbianism is feminism. Right? Wrong!!!  Let's tackle this one step at a time.

1) If one is lesbian, then it is assumed that one hates men or is anti-male.
Being lesbian does not mean that one is anti-male. Lesbians simply lack the attraction to the male species. The preference for female companionship should not be misconstrued into them being against men. All lesbians do not wish to rid the world of all men. If men were gone, then there would be no children. Most lesbians do not hate men, they just do not love men in the way straight women love men.

2) If one is anti-male, then it is assumed that one is pro-women.
This assumption is completely ridiculous. Many lesbians are not pro-women. In fact, there are lesbians who align themselves more with the men than with women. Therefore, they would be would less likely to be for the rights of women. Some lesbians, in order to make themselves feel more powerful, prefer to have women who feel inferior. Now, it is true that some lesbians are pro-women, but it is not because they hate men. They are for women's rights because they are women first.

3)  If one one is pro-women, then one is feminist.
There is a difference between being for women, and being a feminist. Being for women is a belief, while feminists out that belief into practice. Many lesbians prefer not to act. They just want to love and not get involved in the politics. Some lesbians feel as if they are separated from the rest of the female population. Lesbians have different goals and desires. Sometimes a win for women turns out to be a loss for lesbians.

Not all lesbians are the same. It is wrong to lump them all under the same generalization. They are individual humans with their own beliefs.

Welcome to Les-B-Beautiful!

This blog is dedicated to confronting and dismissing the false stereotypes that haunt lesbian women of color. Here is where the truth will be sought. Here is where learning and growing can begin. If one looks back, one can see how far lesbians have come. There was a time when one could not think of speaking or writing about two women being together. There was a time when you could be jailed for loving someone of the same sex. There was a time when you could be killed. And yet, here I am today devoting an entire blog to issues that concern lesbian women of color. Lesbians no longer have to sit in their closets. They are  bravely coming out and demanding that society adapt. They have even entered mainstream media. And the new media takeover, people like me, are pushing lesbianism even further. New media tools, such as blogging, social networking, and video blogging, all help to further the lesbian agenda. Now people do not have to feel as if their sexuality makes them an outcast. They now have somewhere they can go to friend or read about people just like them. Thanks to new media, sites like this are easy to create; and, its even easier for others to locate lesbian-friendly sites. Society's outlook on lesbianism has come a long way, however lesbians still have a lot more to accomplish. This is my way of helping society to progress. It may be small, but sometimes the smallest actions have the largest effects. So as you read, hopefully some of you may be inspired to act and get involved in the lesbian agenda. But even if this blog does not compel you to act, you reading this begins the process of truth-seeking.
